In all seriousness, I think that there is also a lot more calls made by officials in basketball that have a direct affect on the game. Sure, there are big calls in football, baseball, soccer, etc. -- but in basketball is it a constant presence of calling/not calling fouls and violations.

Couple that with the fact that the fans are right at the edge of the court (far too often literally in some gyms!) and you have a heated environment.
