Taking time off the clock.

I have a question about taking time off the clock. In our game the other night we inbounded the ball at the endline with 36.4 seconds on the clock. We noticed that the clock had not started when we got across the division line. We stopped play to rectify the situation but by that time the timer had started the clock and then stopped the clock when we blew the whistle. The clock now had 35.4 on it. I talked with my partner who was trail official and he said he had a four count in the back court. Although we did not have definite knowledge of the exact time to take off the clock, where we correct in taking the one second that did run and the four seconds in the back court off?
