Working to get the proper angles demands constant energy to establish good positioning. Officials must recognize and stay out of “straight line” positions to have the best look at a play.
Officials have improved their positioning at the lead position by quickly getting to the other side of the lane to properly officiate weak side rebounding and low post play action. This is a positive step and officials must keep working hard to continue doing this. Some officials are leaving the center position too quickly and move toward mid-court prematurely. The center officials must “stay home” to officiate rebounding, full court pressure and, in general, make certain after a score there is no extracurricular activity by players. Dead ball officiating has not been good. Too many officials are not observing the players in dead ball situations, especially when one official is reporting a foul call. During full-court pressure defense situations the new lead official must close the gap from the end line to the players and help officiate the press, not stay on the end line.
