Backcourt Violation?

I seem to recall from discussions that this is NOT a backcourt violation. I even remember a case play, but can't find it. Can someone help me out.

A1 is inbounding the ball. A2 is in their front court. A1 lobs the ball to airborne A2 who catches the ball and then lands in the backcourt.

I believe this is OK. I know it is a violation if it occurred while A1 was holding or dribbling a live ball inbounds, but I seem to recall that on a throw-in this is not a violation.

Am I right and can someone give me the case play for it?

Thanks in advance!
Randall

You are correct this is not a violation, see 9-9-3. I don't think that there is a casebook reference for this, though.

After I had asked the question I did a search and found the thread.

I don't think this is true for FIBA.

A1 inbounds (in the BC?) and throws the ball to A2. A2 is standing in the FC; he then jumps
catchs the ball
and lands in the BC?
I don't see why this wouldn't be a BC violation.
They have team control
Team A was the last to touch it in the FC
and the first to touch it in the BC

I suppose it's no a BC-vio under rules-sets wich say "no team control" during throw-ins though.

I don't know about FIBA, but I can tell you that while the NCAA does have team control during throw-ins, they have a specific exception that makes this a legal play written into the rules.
