Hey i have a dumb question - but does the NHFS rule book states that officials must use "BLACK WHISTLE?" Cause I see this website sells yellow/orange color FOX 40. They are kind of cool!!!

never knew they make them in all color.

I'm guessing it says black whistle, a different color whistle really isn't acceptable and I know if I was using orange/red/yellow ect and my assignor saw me he would rip me a new one.

Yes, I believe it actually does say a black whistle or a black tip guard if you were using a metal whistle.

The other colors have been around since the beginning. When I used to lifeguard, we generally used them vs. black ones. The color adds distinction when you're in a life-threatening situation and are easily visualized.

Same concept as a red or orange lifejacket...makes it more visible to rescuers.

Anyone actually encounter a metal whistle lately? I haven't seen one in years and if my partner(s) came out with one, then I'd ask if he/she had a Fox40. If it's a newbie I'm reffing with, then I'd even provide one of my extras because the sound of a pea whistle sounds terrible to me now.

I certainly haven't ran into anyone with a metal whistle. I would agree, a metal whistle sounds terrible. Again, I'm with you Dribble, if a new official was going to come out or did come out (and I missed it) with a metal whistle, I would give them a Fox40.

Anyone have a rules reference? Just curious, because I don't see where the Rules book or the Official Manual covers what officials wear, but I know I've seen it in writing about black shoes and pants - are specifics on officials' attire covered somewhere else?
