First of all, IANAL, but I do know that you are liable if you allow a player to play with jewelry and their is an injury to either that player or another player.

I never officiate a game if the court administration (rec league) tells players they may wear jewelry, taped over or not. I will not risk my entire career just because some kid got her ears pierced the day before, or because some guy doesn't want to take off his wedding ring.

Also, I don't allow rubberbands on the wrist, ever since I saw a kid get his little finger caught under one while swiping at the ball, and dislocated it (his finger, not the ball).

Usually I tell a complaining kid that they don't have to remove their jewelry - they just can't play if they don't.

If I get an obstinate coach and/or parent, I even have gone so far as to get out the NF rulebook, show them the rule and ask "what part of 'no jewelry' don't you understand?"
