With the emphasis on enforcing the box this year I've heard an interesting interpretation.

At least one prominent official in my area of Illinois is stating that the coaches seat on the bench must be in the coaches box. I've looked at the rule book and it doesn't say anything about where a coach has to sit. It only states that the coach CAN stand in the designated box and gives its dimensions and court placement.

My feeling is that the coach can sit wherever he/she wants. When they're standing they must be in the box. Penalizing them for the couple of steps it takes to get to the box seems to be taking the rules to extreme. The official rationale behind the POE this year was that being out of the box gives a coach/team an advantage. Walking 2 or 3 steps to the box doesn't seem to be an advantage.

Any thoughts?

There is a specific case in the book that indicates that if the coach's seat is not in the box, then the coach forfeits the box.

Using last year's case book,eh? Geeze, spend some money and get a new one.

It's 10.5.1SitE in this year's case book. Same verbiage- just re-numbered.

You are exactly right. I did use last season's case book when looking that one up. I left my current book in the car and didn't want to go out and get it, so I grabbed the old one off the shelf.
I was hoping that the number hadn't changed, but no such luck.

Thanks JR.
