Prepare for camp
As a supervisor looking at official's qualities are very important.
1. Is that individual in shape. 2. Is he a family man. 3. Does he/she have a regular job. 4. Is he/she a gambler. 5. Do they have great court sense. 6. Impeccable judgement. 7. Does he/she listen well. 8. Are they people person. 9. How do they handle the coach, players and fans. 10. Are you willing to travel. |

The most important quality to have is a great attitude. You may be the best "referee" out there, but if you can't accept constructive critism you will never make it. Also, there is nothing worse than an official who is out of shape, or one who is in shape and doesn't hustle. Obviously, you want to try to be in the right place so that you have the opportunity to make the right call, but in camps it's the little things that make you standout. Are your mechanics crisp? Are you having fun? Do you hustle? Do you interact well with your partners? Do you put the game first? Can you be trusted to manage the game? Good luck!!

I could agree with the other two officials any better. When it comes to camp preparation you need to take care of a lot of different things before going to camp. All the items that were previously mentioned are important and need to be addressed, but I think the most important thing is you have to have your thoughts and goals in order when it comes to moving up the ladder through camps. Good Luck!!

I would add to these great posts that you should go
prepared to listen to everything that is said to you, even if it contradicts what you were just told 2 minutes ago by someone else. Don't argue, file it all away & use what works for you. |

I enjoy this forum and find it to be a bunch of classy, intelligent people. For those that are interested in a professionally designed strength and conditioning program, I would love to have you visit my companies site at http://www.excellencethroughexercise.com and see if we can help. The site was designed for athletes, but we are thinking of adding a section for officials (for several reasons). If you have any questions on conditioning or training, please feel free to email me.
Best regards, Ryan Hawkins |
