When I was growing up in the 60s in VT, NY had 18 as the legal age. When the vote came to 18 year olds in 1972, a lot of states dropped the drinking age to 18 as well. It was 18 in Maine when I lived there in the 70s and turned 18. They raised it to 20 when I was 20. [only had mad dog 20/20 once]. Most states bumped it up to 21 with the seat belt laws when the feds tied highway funds to those laws.
