LEAD official signals other way after baskets (NCAA), why?
Subject should read: LEAD official, not trail...my bad.
After watching 11 games at the SEC Tournament and many games so far today (DirecTV March Madness Ticket is awesome), I have noticed that if Team A scores the LEAD official will point in the direction of Team B almost immediately. Why? Is this to reset the shot clock or what? Also, I've noticed that it doesn't happen on every score (maybe it's just certain officials?). Just curious, thanks, [Edited by SeahawkSanders on Mar 17th, 2005 at 04:19 PM]

Yes, the official is signaling the shot clock operator to reset the shot clock. You will see it done alot also when there are scrums in the lane, and the defense attains possession of the ball.
Unfortunately, it's a bad habit I've picked from doing college games, and I know I mistakenly incorporate it into my high school games from time to time. |

I always thought it was a "yeah coach, i saw it, but it's nothing, play-on" mechanic when there are scrums, flops, potential and-ones, etc.
At least, that's how it was explained to me by a D1 official when I first saw it. espcially since you sometimes see it even before the ball is inbounded after a basket.
