At a time way long long ago (so far back that the exact date escapes me), the imaginary line extending north and south that divided the population of the US in half was located near the town. Hence the "Heart" of the country.
Where the "Flaming" part came from I don't know.

Did a game yesterday with a team named "Thinking Men". They were a 10U AAU team. Instead of players names on their jersys, they had words like "Diligent", "Obey" etc...It seemd kinda odd to me so I never bothered asking the coach about it.

Almost an accurate analogy.

Question

Just read a story in the sports section this morning that there was a brawl yesterday between two minor league baseball teams - the South Georgia Peanuts and the Macon Music.

Wasn't (or isn't) there a team named the Macon Whoopies? I'm serious.

This has probably been mentioned in this (old) thread, but there is (or was) a team in MI called the "Nimrods." Sounds funny today, but it's actually the name of some hunter in the bible, or something (and that weak description sounds more perjorative than I mean it to be -- it's a reflection of my ignorance).

In fact, I once met a fellow official by that name at a basketball camp. He was from the east coast, iirc, and worked many levels. This thread reminds me that I didn't see him at camp this year (at IL College).

I think I might know him. Is his first name "Ima"? If so, he coached a huge number of my games.

You're right, he wasn't there.

It's too bad; he did bring some flavor to the camp.

I almost forgot what i think is an unusual mascot name: Nothing.

Hollins College (in Virginia, I think) has no athletic mascot name. A few years back, I was building a list of colleges and their mascots for my sports database and asked one of my fellow SIDs if he know Hollins' mascot. Was suprised to see him tell me they had none.

The RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) sports teams are called the Nads.

I also knew of an intramural team (of med students) who called themselves the Cremasters.

There was in the Sally League. Someone probably made them change the name.
