Sitch: A-Home, B-Visiting. A1 scrapes hand and starts bleeding but goes unnoticed for a few minutes. During contact in the post for rebounds, A1's bloody hand stains three players jerseys - B1, B2, and B3. Once noticed, A1, along with B1, B2, and B3 are called off the floor. A1's jersey is OK, but gets a bandage put on. B1 and B2 get replacement jerseys with different numbers that the visiting team had available. Book was changed with no penalty.
There is no third replacement available to the visiting team, so coach asks if player can wear a jersey of a bench player that wasn't figuring to play. Officials allowed it, and so B12 took off jersey giving it to B3. Table crossed out B12's name and changed B3's number in the book. Again no tech or violation. Question: While the above seems to make sense overall, is this OK? References please. I've tried to locate one but don't have a clue where to start (you know us coaches aren't as smart as officials. ![]()

See Casebook 3.3.6 Situation A
Here is the comment for that play: Replacement jerseys can be used if there is blood...The spirit & intent of the rule is to do everything possible to allow the player to use a different shirt without penalty. However, identical numbers shall not be allowed on the same team. Joe |

State playoffs - sweet 16. B1 got blood on himself and A1. Team A didn't have spare jerseys because they brought up JV players to fill the roster. Team A asked to use the jersey of a player in the book, but who hadn't played - without penalty. Officials wouldn't let them.
Answer - club soda from the concession stand. Going forward, Team A put a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in its game bag.

So now I'm confused. Can you use a jersery of a another player who is in the book but hasn't played? At all? With a penalty? Without a penalty?

But it's important to point out that the blood doesn't matter much if it's not "excessive". If he just scraped his hand, and it's sort of oozing slowly, and there is a small, thin smear of blood on the jersey, it's probably not illegal, especially after a few seconds.
However, if they want to change jerseys, it's legal to trade with a player who won't then play. Gotta go find my books to get references. |
