Urgently need your help. What´s the meaning?

Hi!

I´m new to this forum. My name is Elita, I´m from Argentina, and I´m an English-Spanish translator.

I need some urgent help understanding what these basketball- specific words mean:

1) "down" (context: "Whenever we have a down, it´s a pick and roll")

2) "re-pick" (context: "C-out" Is a re-pick." )

3) "pick" (context: "2 pick one. 4 pick--no. 2 picks 4, and 5 picks 2. 32.")

Could any of you please give me a hand? Also if you happen to know some Spanish translation for them, I´ll be more than grateful to you.

Are you translating the communication from a coach to player(s)?

Elita,

A pick is another name for what we would call a screen. It's a situation in which one player stands still in the path of an opponent. This is usually done by the team that has the ball. One player will stand still while his teammate runs past him. When he goes by, the opponent runs into the "pick", leaving the other player open to receive the ball.

Unfortunately, I don't know what "re-pick" would mean, or what "down" means in your context. Sorry I can't be more help.

Mikesears: yes, I´m translating the communications from a coach to a player (this is actually a documentary video that I´m translating, with some parts where the coach gives instructions to players).

If you are describing a play, it may be helpful for us if you explained what you are seing in the video.

Re-Pick: Player A1 screens the opponent. When the opponent runs past the screen, the offense changes direction and the same player re-screens the same opponent.

Down: I'm just guessing here, but that might be the name of the play that's being run. So, the phrase, "whenver we have a down" might be translated as "Whenever we run the play called 'down' (or containing the word 'down') it's a pick-and-roll."

South GA BBall Ref: unfortunately, the video is not helpful at all there. All I see in that part is a coach kneeling down and telling the player what to do. They don´t show the actual play or illustrate the tactic he mentions in any way.

bob jenkins: thanks a lot, I think with what you tell me I can now manage to find a translation.

I have a new one for you: "random", in this context:

"If the previous play was not successful, they´ll call “random.”

And this guy will come down
and you have to set a pick for him. It´s called random."

What does random mean there? I don´t get it.

Sounds like that team's name for a certain play. I'm guessing that any word you can't find a meaning for will be the name of a play. Around here, we get some weird play-names. Especially at the junior high level. One year I had a team that named all their plays after cartoon characters, "Snoopy", "Smurfs", "Pikachu" and so forth. Makes for some interesting conversations!
