Officiating an 8th grade boys game with a 14 yr. veteran official. Ball is past to the top of key. Defensive player sprints up and plants both feet without making contact. Offensive player with ball spins sideways to protect the ball and then comes back with an elbow to the gut.
My partner blows whistle and signals for the Technical. The offenswive coach complains, what's that? Partner says, "that is an automatic T." I'm not disputing the call but where is it found in the rules that the call is an automatic technical? Rule 9-13 addresses excessive swinging of Elbows without contact as a violation. A little help? |

It's not an automatic T. It's not even a T.
It's a personal foul. It's a contact foul during a live ball. By rule, it's a personal foul. Now, if you want to call it intentional or flagrant, that's a possibility. Your partner needs to buy a rule book. ![]() |

BBR is correct.
However, if I read the post correctly, the person that committed the foul was holding the ball. if so, this becomes a player control foul.

This is a PF. Now it could be called intentional or flagrant. Of course if this happens, intentional would be 2 shots and the ball nearest where the foul occured. Flagrant, of course he's history--ejection.
