Another thread asked which states use the 3-man system, but that thread seemed to go off on a tangent and get a little murky.
I was speaking with someone from our state office and he thought that this would be an interesting list to create/have because we are struggling to keep 3-man here. Therefore, I have started this thread.
I ask that you just list your state and whether regular season Varsity games are done with 2 or 3 officials. If 3-man is used only (with the exception of a tournament or two) for the playoffs, please note that. i.e. (3 Playoffs only) or (3 at State)
If you could also give the game fee per official that would be great.

Nevada uses 3-man @ $45.

MA: 3-whistle for state semis and finals only. 2-whistle fee is $66 for V.

The NCHSAA requires that all varsity games be officiated by 3 man crews.

Regular season
2 games - $75
1 game $50

Playoffs and tournaments
2 games - $90
1 game - $60

Some associations also use 3 man in JV. The game fees are $10 less than varsity.

Here in Louisiana, it is 2 man crew.

It depends on the area, here all varsity is 2 person except for the top league which has gone to a three person system. Most of the later rounds of the playoffs use 3 person as well. I also know of some places where all HS games are done in crews of 3, but the officials take a $15 pay cut to make it happen.

I expect NevadaRef would like to know which state you're describing!

In Oregon, all high school ball is 2-whistle. Period. Except for a couple of isolated camp or tournament thingys. Fees run around $38 - $45 (not including mileage) per ref per game for varsity, depending on the size of the school. In Portland. Play-off and tournament games pay more, I don't know exactly how much. I don't know for sure what fees are in the rest of the state, but I understand they are similar.

Georgia uses mostly 3-man this year (all schools in my association except maybe one private school).
Last year our fees for were 3-man $37.00, not sure how much it went up this year.

Washington is going to use 3-person at all state tournaments this year for the first time.

District tournaments may or may not use 3-person (depends on each district). The use of 3-person officiating in the regular season is negotiated between each local association and their leagues. It's a real mess. Some regions are doing 3-person exclusively. Some regions are only doing 2-person. Others are doing a mix. It's going to be a huge disadvantage at the state tournaments for high school officials who have done very few if any 3-person games during the season. They will have no chance at competing with the officials who have been practicing 3-person all year.

2-person in this state pays $48.00 per official plus travel.
3-person is in an "experimental 3-year trial" and pays only $33.00 per official plus travel.

Simple math shows that a school only has to pay $3.00 more to get the additional third ref (travel is a set fee regardless of whether it is split between 2 or 3 officials), yet many schools are resisting (many officials aren't happy about it either but they are accepting it despite much grumbling). Many schools are resisting because they fear that it may "become accepted" which would mean certain approval of 3-person in our state for all games after the 3-year trial period at which time the 3-person fee would go up to about $42.00 per official.

Utah uses 2-whistle everywhere. They pay $42 for varsity, $25 for sub-varsity. You do get a flat $10 per official for travel along the Wasatch Front (which is most of the schools in Utah).

All IHSA Playoff games are done with 3 Officials.

Regular season games are based on the conference, school or assignor whoever has a say. I would say around 95% of the state does their regular season games with 3 Person crews.

The same thing goes for the fees. It is based on the schools or the conferences. They vary way too much to list.

Pennsylvania uses 3-whistle for boys and girls varsity ball during the regular and post season. Fees in Western PA run from $50 to $75 depending on the section. The recent Referree mag has a break down of game fees nationwide.

Wisconsin uses 2 with Varsity fees of $50-55 in my area. Some conferences pay travel. According to the head honcho at the WIAA, we are eventually going to 3-person for T-ment. Which levels and when is still TBD. The thought is that hopefully after the t-ment goes to 3-person, the schools will eventually fall in line.

TX we are in transition. Most playoff is in 3 person and many of the 5a leagues are 3 person. In my part of the state many of the games are still 2 person.

I also work in Western PA - Mostly Beaver County. Section games use 3 man for Varsity and most non-section games (exhibition) will use 2 man. The exhibitions games are left to the discression of the home school as to how many refs will work the game. Fees vary by school district, depending on what the home school can afford.
