I was doing I game today and one of the players was wearing a head band around his neck. When I mentioned it to one of the evaluators for the officials at the tournament he said this is legal even though I thought it was a safety concern. When I looked through the rule book I could find any mention or guidelines for this. Does anyone have any feedback on this issue.

Headbands are legal. Neckbands are not. A headband worn around the neck is a fuzzy necklace; and necklaces are clearly not allowed.

It always easier to just tell a player what to do. But the reason for my question was get a rules interpretation.

Headbands are legal. Neckbands are not. A headband worn around the neck is a fuzzy necklace; and necklaces are clearly not allowed.

I think Chuck hit the nail on the head.

He gave you a rule interpretation.

If it's on the head, it's a head band.

If it's around the neck, it's not.

The evaluator was wrong.

I had a game last weekend in which a player was wearing a headband with the shiny/glittery NBA logo on it. I told her that if she wished to wear it, she had to turn it inside-out. She chose to take it off.

Why? Did the logo exceed 2 1/2 inches in any dimension?

No, but there was some memo that came out from the (I think it was)Wisconsin state association that clearly stated that any NBA logo headbands and sweatbands were not legal for NFHS play. I even think someone put it on this forum.
The rationale was basically that the NBA is not the manufacturer, so the 2 1/4 in. logo rule does not apply.
I happen to agree.

PS Note that it is two and a quarter inches.

I happen to disagree. The NBA licenses their logo to manufacturers, exactly the same way that Nike, Reebok, etc. also do. Do you make players with Nike logoed headbands on remove them also? A Wisconsin state association directive does not necessarily apply to any other state either. Unless you have something specific from the NFHS or the Nevada governing body, I really don't think that it's up to you whether you should ban any specific logo or trademark, if they do not exceed the legal dimensions set out in the rulebook.

One visible manufacturer's logo/trademark is permitted on the pants, compression shorts, sweatbands and headband and shall be limited to 21/4 square inches and shall not exceed 21/4 inches in any dimension on each item. No visible manufacturer's logo/trademark is permitted on the shirt or undershirt. See 10-3-2 for penalty.

The NBA is not a manufacturer.

Therefore, the NBA logo is not a manufacturer's logo.

Nike is a manufacturer.

Therefore, the Nike logo is a manufacturer's logo.

It doesn't get anymore specific than that.
