Situation:
A1 has throw-in at baseline in front court. 4th quarter, less than 2 minutes remaining in game. Team B is behind in the score. B1clearly grabs A2s jersey to prevent him from getting open for an inbounds pass from A1. Would you or would you not call an intentional foul on B1. Why or why not?

I'd need to see it to call it.
If the player was trying to foul "early" to keep the clock from starting, to put A on the line, etc., then it's intentional. If B was beaten on the play and grabbed the jersey to stop the pass, then it's intentional. If B was just playing defense and happened to commit a foul, then it's not intentional. |

At first blush, as described, I probably have a Hold. And, trust that I will call an intentional foul, in fact I called one last night, in the first 3 minutes of the game. It was one of those messes in a loose ball scrum. One of the players didn't quit. mick |

I was there last night...
Frosh Boys... Green down by 6, 1:34 left.
Gold garners a long rebound on the defensive end. Gold lifts ball above his head and looks downcourt for an outlet pass. Green closes in and immediately pushes Gold (not aggressively, but with intent to make contact) at the waistline. (No attempt for the ball) I whistle and signal intentional. Green coach goes ballistic. After reporting the call, I tactfully and calmly describe to Green Coach what I saw. He was upset; however, I felt I gave him more than enough information. While I administer the FTs, I hear bits and pieces of his comments which were being made for everyone to hear. With the exemption of handful of parents, the gym is empty (quiet). Green Coach has a very resonating voice. I heard something to the effect of, "I see how it is.(blah, blah, blah)...cheating...(blah, blah, blah).... how can you make that call...(blah, blah, blah)...The thought crossed my mind to "ring him up", then my second thought was that he was not worth that acknowledgement. I can live with the disagreement on the call... the inference of cheating is what "pushed my buttons". Should I have T'd him?

Give him a cookie to with His "T". ( or a little cheese with his w(h)ine, maybe. I saw this today. Official made the right call like you did at the end of a game. Coach went nuts, and said the call was Bull#@%&. Ref calmly gave him a "T". He kept complaining a little and said he has not had a "T" in years. (he was on the court at this point). REF said, "If you don't sit down, you'll be getting another." Why to go, dude!

I really enjoy reading the dialogue in this forum... Helps me refine my understanding of "Game Management" and rules interpretation.
Thanks All!

No question, this is an intentinal foul by B1. A no brainer. I would expect my first your officiating students to make this call.

I have to agree, that judgment comes into play. You need to know the game situation; ie. who is behind in the score, time remaining, etc, before ruling. In most cases, I would lean toward calling an intentional foul, but there are exceptions. For instance, a player reaches to slap the ball away from a dribbler and accidently grabs his/her jersey. In this case, an intentional foul would not be justified. "Intent" is the keyword here.
