I live in Seattle, but I enjoy traveling to tournaments, especially if the competition is good. I recently traveled to the End of the Oregon Trail tournament in Oregon City- a excellent girls viewing tourney.

I noticed NevadaRef mention working the BigTime in Las Vegas, and I wondered whom I might contact next year in order to schedule some games? Larry McKay is listed as the tournament director, but I imagine that someone else coordinates the officials. Is it done through the local association?

Thanks in advance.

So it was good for viewing the girls, huh? But how was the basketball?

Did you work, Tee? Lotta fun, eh? Which games did you have? Perhaps we bumped elbows somewhere...

Larry McKay does sort of handle the refs. The local association has one or two sites (every HS in Las Vegas has a main and auxilary gym) and the rest are left to camps. The NBA has a coast to coast camp, the SEC has a camp and the SWAC has a camp. I might be missing someone. Nevadaref probably comes down to work with the local guys. Mr. McKay probably "invites" some officials from the north. Nevada is such a small state population (officials) wise that we pretty much all know each other. He might also have been assigned some games by the local assigner.

The SWAC no longer holds its camp in conjunction with the Addidas Big Time in Vegas.

It's no longer the Addidas Big Time. Sonny Vaccaro works for Reebok now so it is called the Reebok Big Time.

rainmaker,

I was there in Oregon City all 4 days. Thursday at the old HS, Friday at the CC, and Sat. and Sunday at the new high school. I was lucky enough to get the Sat. semi final between Colorado and New York.

New York had a 8 point lead with under a minute and ended up losing in OT. My part of this was a pushing foul as #1 hit a three from the corner. We shot the double bonus to make it a five point play and after a turnover the same player hit a buzzer three to tie it. Someone told me she was the top rated junior in the country and is going to Duke.

Sunday we were on OC1 again all morning- lots of good (championship)games. Mostly I was working with the 18 year old prodigy I brought with me as I find it easier to do well with a partner that I know.

And in answer to the question- do I work? Isn't basketball work? I have a couple of rentals, but basicly I make a living by reffing. I have to have some way to pay for the 4 camps I am attending this summer

Keep in mind that unlike the studs that are making $900 a game doing Pac10- I need quantity. At $20-$24 a game one needs to do quite a few. I had 25 games over the 4 day tournament.

As for viewing the girls... I'll leave that to the college coaches- they are just numbers to me

Why?????? If the basket is made and there is a foul on a 3 point attempt, you still only get one shot, regardless of whether or not you are in the double bonus.

That is unless, of course, the foul was against a different player than the one shooting or the foul was deemed to have occured after the shooter returned to the floor. This was not clear in your post, but I sincerely hope that is what happened. Otherwise, the wrong team probably won the game.

I'm guessing it was "the big X".

I'm guessing B2 fouled A2 under the basket as the two were positioning for a rebound.

Count the 3.

Shoot 2 if there are 10 team fouls or nore.

The shot came from the corner, the defender was coming from the lane and was trying to get through the screen. She pushed down the screener (to the ground)as the shot was released.

I was trail on opposite side but with such obvious contact I called it after a moment to see if my partner on lead who was watching the ball had it.

Not that it should matter, but I was gratified by the comments the next day that it was a foul that needed to be called.

In addition to what tomegun said above, which is all correct, I know that some officials from the Sacramento area have a gym. Last year it was Coronado. I talked to two of them earlier this summer and they stated that they would be coming again this week. Those of us who go as a group and have a gym are paid about $30 per game (3-whistle), those who work as part of a camp pay to officiate.
I don't really know the process by which certain groups of officials get delegated a gym. I also don't know for sure who has the say on that. I suspect it is done as a courtesy and through personal connections. I'll try to find out more details this week.
For the record, eight Northern Nevada officials are going down this year and will work the games in the main gym at Mojave HS on Thurs, Fri, and Sat. I have 4 games each day, if anyone wishes to show up and heckle.
Tomegun,
I won't be working for the Vegas assignor because I didn't want to put him in an uncomfortable position where he would have local refs upset with him for giving me games.
