Mr. McKay probably "invites" some officials from the north. Nevada is such a small state population (officials) wise that we pretty much all know each other. He might also have been assigned some games by the local assigner.
In addition to what tomegun said above, which is all correct, I know that some officials from the Sacramento area have a gym. Last year it was Coronado. I talked to two of them earlier this summer and they stated that they would be coming again this week. Those of us who go as a group and have a gym are paid about $30 per game (3-whistle), those who work as part of a camp pay to officiate.
I don't really know the process by which certain groups of officials get delegated a gym. I also don't know for sure who has the say on that. I suspect it is done as a courtesy and through personal connections. I'll try to find out more details this week.
For the record, eight Northern Nevada officials are going down this year and will work the games in the main gym at Mojave HS on Thurs, Fri, and Sat. I have 4 games each day, if anyone wishes to show up and heckle.
Tomegun,
I won't be working for the Vegas assignor because I didn't want to put him in an uncomfortable position where he would have local refs upset with him for giving me games.
