Anyone watch the ND @ Seton Hall game last night? I was astonished at all the palming of the ball that was going on!! (Granted, this was the first WHOLE game that I've actually sat down and watched this year.) Although both teams were doing it, the two SH guards should have put a darn HANDLE on it as they were doing it CONSTANTLY!! A few times it was so bad that you could actually see the WHOLE ball above the hand as the palm was pointing straight up!!!
I have called anywhere from 1 to 3 carrying violations each game this year. I inevitably hear, "What?!?! We haven't had that called on us all year!" Has anyone else been calling many? Please comment because I'm interested in knowing! [Edited by Indy_Ref on Jan 9th, 2001 at 08:31 AM] |

Watching Allen Iverson makes me go crazy! I understand that the NBA calls the carry/palming a little different, but the way he dribbles is ridiculous.
It is our responsibility to call this starting at the lowest level. If we do not, it only gets worse as the players move up.

Our crew was calling it to the letter and had to back off. We were calling 8 to 10 per game. We were calling 3 or 4 per game last year. There's no question in my mind that they were legit but when no one is calling it per the book, you have to back off. Not that I like it but we've had to.

We have Youth ball prior to the HS season! two things I try not to miss in this league for the kids is travelling and carrying. After about two games! If I called a travel or an illegal dribble(Carry). The coach would tell the kids(not me) to watch what they were doing! The reason I bring this up, a lot of the same kids play HS ball! I will try to catch the carrying in a HS games, but I know I do not call them all! We all would have to call it the same to make a difference, but we are all human and every game is different!!

a lot then I backed off also. It's kinda tough to go against the tide. |

1- The little hesitation move when the dribbler goes up on his/her tiptoes - Many times the dribbler does a quick little wrist flick and carrys the ball. 2- The move where the ball spins in the dribblers hand - Usually a crossover is coming but the dribble has actually ceased. It's a double dribble but carrying/palming will do just as well. Both are hesitation moves that are actually illegal. |

yesterday in that game (seton hall vs ND), do you think there was acutally a charge on one of the last plays???
i didn't think so. the player was still moving. one of his feet was in the air, and they still called a charge on ND! oh and as for carries, iverson makes me wonder about the rules sometimes... |

Ilya, that was a great call.
They had one camera angle that split the players, the guard clearly used his free arm to "create" some space with a push. The defender might have over glorified it, but, he had position and it still was a good call in my opionion. |
