Question

I was wondering if someone could clear this up for me. In college hoops if Team A calls a timeout and immediately returns to the floor, does Team B have to? I know you can call a timeout for subbing then play has to resume immediately. This situation doesn't deal with that. Thanks for your inputs.

In NCAA, for non-media games, if the team that is granted the TO is ready to resume play before the 60-second warning horn, the horn is sounded immediately and play will resume in 15 seconds.

In addition, under NCAA rules, a timeout can also be used for the purposes of substitution only. In this case, play resumes immediately without a warning horn and a 15 second delay.

Chuck --

Do you have a reference for this?

I ask because this is how I used to enforce the rule, until someone locally pointed out that the rule says something like, "A TO can be shortened on the request of the coach or captain."

According to this individual, just ahving the team come out of the huddle early isn't reason to shorten the TO.

Thoughts?

Great point. I think most folks infer the coach/captain wants to shorten the TO when they break the huddle and come back on the floor. I know I do.

Also, we have been instructed to give to other team a chance to sub. Team A, captain says we are ready to play, so I go to Team B huddle and tell them their ready to play, if you want to sub you will need to do it now. Then we have to warning horn.

NCAA 5-10-20: "The team that requests a timeout may shorten that timeout when the captain/head coach notifies the official of the team's intent."

As Dan said, the coach notifies the official of his intent when he sends 5 players onto the floor.
