Was wondering how often you call a carry during a game and do you feel that violation has become more prevelant in the past few years? Looking forward to your feedback, it is a call I dont see called a lot and was wondering what the official definition is and the opinions are you folks who are in the trenches calling the game. Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

Change direction of ball
The kids today are very athletic. They can do a lot legally with the ball. But, wshen I see the ball coming off of the dribble, then change lets say 90 degrees, I call a carry.
BTW do you call it a carry, walking, or illegal dribble?

Double dribble
If you want to be precise, it's an illegal dribble. The dribble ended when the palm was up, a new dribble was started when the dribbler put it back down.

The palm can be be facing down,up, whatever, and you can still have either a "palming" violation or a legal dribble. The key to the call is whether the ball came to rest in the dribbler's hand, or not. If, in the opinion of the official, it did come to rest, you have a violation.

I call a carry if more than half the hand contacts the lower half of the ball while dribbling.
I call the palm up a double dribble. I call these maybe about 3 times on a single player before the coach pulls him/her off and tries to explain the proper way to dribble the ball. I don't call it every game, but certain players do it everytime they dribble the ball.

When I get juked out by a player because I thought he was about to pass then next thing I know the ball is back on the ground, I'm usually stunned for a second and then tweet. Carry. Anyone else get caught off guard by these.

Footlocker,
I see that sometimes, too. On Friday, my partner called a 'carry' on a kid who had the 'rainbow' dribble, but it wasn't a dribble, she caught it before it reached the floor. I talked to him later, but had no authority to overrule him at the time. I see fans calling for a 'carry' in that situation a lot. |

mplagrow, what is your signal for an illegal dribble. There are signals for traveling, illegal dribble (double dribble), and palming/carry. You know what we are talking about here, if the ball comes to rest and the dribble continues - call it. signal carry or DD. What's the point?

Use the book
Quote:
The point is, we harp on coaches for asking us to call 'reaching in' and 'over the back.' Then we come up with an unofficial mechanic, flipping the wrist and call out 'carry!' I make an effort to keep my calls and mechanics within the limits of the rulebook. If a coach asks for clarification, I'll tell him he palmed it or carried it, but until they create a new mechanic, I've got an illegal dribble.

[/B][/QUOTE]See signal #19- "palming/carrying the ball". That's the approved symbol. |
