Make sure to tell the coach, not the players!

I have had occasion that before I officially enter the court and start my duties, see players attempting or in one case dunk. I go straight to the coach and remind him to keep his players off of the rim. I am talking about over 10 minutes before game time.

Then once, I am on the court, its strickly business. It is the coaches responsibility to keep his players in line. I actually had this happen last week. I "thought I saw a dunk from the corner of my eye" and told this to the coach. He went straight over and yelled at his players. 3 minutes before tip-off, one of his players makes a beautiful dunk. ESPN top 10 stuff. I told the coach we had T. He couldn't believe it. They won by 50 points anyway.

Pre-Game Dunk

Mark, please clarify why the 10-minute mark would make a difference.

If you're talking about the 4 shot for T's post that Mark made, the extra 2 shots would be for replacing a designated starter after the 10-minute mark. The post that Mark was commenting on said that the head coach had the pre-game dunker on the bench at the start of the game instead of on the floor. Before the 10-minute mark, the coach could have legally changed his starting lineup.

It's good to know the rule, and I'm a huge advocate of knowing the ins-and-outs of even the obscure situations. . .

But. . .

If this team is "notorious" for dunking, my suggestion would be to take some sort of pre-emptive action. As soon as you get on the floor, or as soon as the team comes onto the floor, I would be the first one in the lay-up line and tell them that you're watching for dunks.

Instead of catching them, I'd rather prevent the dunks. JMO
JMO as well.
