NCAA Women's, We have 5 players from each team on the floor getting ready to start the OT period. The clock is now set at 5min. for the OT period. Now the coach realizes we will start with a jump ball. Now we wants to put in his big girl to be the jumper. Can't find anything in the book about when they are legal players to start the OT period. What do you think?

Bart,
I think:
  • OT is an extension of 2nd half not a separate entity.
  • Player did not report before warning signal and shall not be permitted.

I agree with Mick, and would officiate the situation the same way.

Of course, Mick is smart, so it goes without saying that I would agree with him.

NCAA and the coach doesn't know how overtime starts? Somebody forgot his thinking cap, but no need for you to correct it.

I suppose he could burn a time out to get her in though?

AR 5-10-15 says: "Substitutions shall not occur after the warning signal to prepare to resume play until at least one live-ball period has occured and the ball becomes dead."

Can the coach use his overtime timeout?

    Thanks - that's pretty definitive.

5-10 refers to time-outs, not intermissions.

Here's the relevant rule: 3-4, Art. 2. Substitutions between halves shall be reported to the official scorer by the substitute(s) or a team representative before the signal that ends the intermission rather than after the warning signal.

The situation originally described had the players on the court ready to play, which sounds like it's after the second horn. Hence no sub. But a sub would be allowed between the warning horn and the second horn, unlike after a time-out.

    Lotto,
It says "between halves", not between periods.

    PACoach,
I do not believe the extra time-out is of any use until the OT clock has run.

    You're right.

But 5-10 refers to charged time-outs, not the intermission between the second half and an overtime, so it clearly doesn't apply either.

The question is, which part of 3-4 (which deals with substitutions) applies to the intermission between the second half and an overtime period? I think that 3-4.2 (cited above) is the closest.

    No go.

The sub herself needs to report in before 45 seconds is up - coach can't go over to the table and check her in.
