I did my first (HS) game Friday night, and I had this happen to me. The home team coaches was standing every time I noticed the benches. I was the lead at half court overing a fullcourt press. My partner was trail putting the ball in play alone the endline. I nearly ran over the home team coaches; without thinking I told the head coach, " Coach you guys have to be sitted the clock is running." On the first time out, the head coach went to my partner, questioning what I had told him. My partner came to me and asked, if I had told the coaches they could not stand and coach. I replied, " Yes!" My partner then said, the coaches could stand as long as they were not yelling at us or making a seen and as long as they were in the coaches box. I told my partner, all bench personnel must be sitted when the clock is running. And, there were provisions in the rules stating when the coach could stand. I could careless what the coach think. I don't have my rule book with me, but was I right or wrong? HELP!

Your thinking of the coaches rules under 10-5. This gives specific rules under which a coach can stand. However, under rule 1-13-2 there is a note that state associations may adopt a coaching box rule that allows the coach to stand to give instructions. It sounds like your state may have adopted this rule.

Even with the coaching box, however, the assistant coach(es) must remain seated. Only the head coach is allowed to use the coaching box.

Also, your partner should have understood why you were confused, pointed out to you the different parts of the book that you could turn to, and congratulated you on studying the rules so carefully. That kind of diligence will take you far! |
