We submitted a question to our state interp on the coach/player pregame conference

What is the protocol if a coach does not/refuses to attend?

Any thoughts or views from other states?

Lightbulb inviting the Coach

Brian,
I make sure that I ask them. Period.

Apparently there was a situation where the coach refused.

Brian,
In my cases of Coaches not attending it is: "I've heard it before." I have about 80% attendance.

In Illinois it is not an option. The coaches are suppose to attend the conferences period. It might not be the head coach but at least an assistant.

Yo Rut,
If they refuse... what then?
I just go on without them. I can find no guidance for doing otherwise.

In Ga it is mandatory for the head coach to attend
the pre-game conference. If the coach refuses it is sent
up to the state in a game report and the state deals with
it.

Re: supposed to... or must?

If they do not attend or have some kind of coach representative, then we file what we call here a "Special Report Form." This is the same form that we file for an ejection or any other behavior that undermines the integrity of the game. As I said before (not sure if on this board) we had to do this last year. I personally had no problems. Mary Struckoff, the editor of the rulebook was from Illinois. She put this in the IHSA last year because of some inappropriate comments by an official during a captains conference the year before. And if they do not provide a coach, then I do not have the conference. Nothing can go on unless we want it to. We are in charge, not the coaches. Always remember that.

In Portland, we've been told that the game is delayed until the coach participates.

I'm guessing that a T could be called for delaying the start of the game by more than a minute if a penalty is needed.

Northern California -- we invite the coach and carry on whether a coach joins us or not. I've had very few conferences with a coach present. I am not aware of any direction to the coaches here.

I just got word that we are to send a report to the state. I hope this never happens to me, but it is a classic example of the NHFS letting the states defend for themselves. I can really see this late in the year, when the conf. will be the same old stuff.

Thumbs up Pre-Game Conference

I remember before the begining of the 1999-2000 season here in New York,There was a pre-game card being issued to all of the officials on my board(who wanted them!)Talking about sportsmanship and they asked us to read this card to the captains during our pre-game with them. To no surprise none of the officials ever used this card(including myself)And I see now they want us to talk about sportsmanship with the coaches and captains. If I am ever placed in a situation as the referee in the crew,I would invite the coaches out to the pre-game and if they decline to come out,I would not make a big deal out of it!Especially from my own experience with pre-games with the captains they don't remember much of what you tell them anyway! that's why I allways keep it simple. Also here in NYC we were not instructed to penalize coaches for not coming out to the pre-game conference.THANK GOD!
