Well, if it's a violation other than OOB (or defensive GT, BI), then the throw-in is ALREADY from one of the 8 spots. So, a throw-in violation would go back to the same one of 8 spots.

And if it's defensive GT / BI, the team is running the end line, and a throw-in violation would result in the other team getting a throw-in at one of the 8 spots on the end-line.

RULING: In (a) Team B is awarded a division line throw-in and in (b) Team B is awarded a throw-in from one of the designated spots closest to where the foul was committed. COMMENT: A throw-in violation that occurs during a division line throw-in remains at the division line. When a foul occurs during a division line throw-in the spot of the in-bound will be based on where the foul occurred. (5-4-2, 7-5-3a, 7-5-4)

Rather than rely on some general "rules of thumb", I decided to use the "penalty" section of different rules (common fouls, violations, etc.) that would subsequently lead to a throwin.

By definition (I assume; I didn't really look this up), "rules of thumb" are wrong in some specific circumstances.
