Thorw-In Spot

T/F: Unless a throw-in is the result of the ball/player going out-of-bounds or due to a technical foul or AP throw-in, throw-ins should be administered from the appropriate designated (one of eight) throw-in spot.

If false, why?

(Yes, I have an opinion, but I'm asking neutrally.)

Aren't all non-intermission (start of period) AP throwins (held balls) from one of the eight appropriate designated spots?

Time Out ...

Out of bounds immediately followed by a time out before the inbounds?

Original OOB throwin spot?

Valley Man Mon Feb 16, 2026 05:17pm

Bob .. I say yes

BillyMac ... yes Original throw in .. if not using a TO would allow either team to move the previous action!

NFHS?

Why wouldn't an AP throw-in that's the result of a held ball go to one of the eight spots?

There fixed it

Thanks. I agree that the "AP throw-in" part is incorrect -- it's only true if it's part of the start of a quarter.

The statement came out from the state office as part of a larger missive. I agree we need to be aware of the throw-in spots, but someone will take the statement literally and put a throw-in at the wrong spot.

False

An example of a situation that does not adhere to that statement is sufficient proof of its falsehood.

My example: Goaltending or defensive basket interference is called. The ensuing throw-in will not be administered from one of the eight spots.

Offensive Basket Interference ...

Correct.

When the offense commits basket interference, no points can be scored, and the ball is awarded to the offended team for a backcourt designated‑spot throw‑in on the end line, from the applicable throw-in spot.

And, of course, we no longer have offensive goaltending.

Out Of Bounds Simultaneously Off Two Opponents. ...

Ball goes out of bounds simultaneously off two opponents.

Alternating possession arrow is utilized.

Now becomes an alternating possession throwin.

Is ball inbounded at original out of bounds spot, or the closest of the eight applicable designated spots?

Throwin Violation ...

Ball goes out of bounds last touched by Team A.

Team B has throwin nearest the spot of the out of bounds violation.

Team B commits a five second throwin violation.

Team A is to inbound the ball due to Team B's five second throwin violation.

Is ball inbounded at original out of bounds spot, or the closest of the eight applicable designated spots?

Forgive me...can't recall exactly but...

This is the throw-in team committing a throw-in violation. Wasn't there a previous situation discussed whereby the inbounding team inbounds the ball but it touches nothing and continues out of bounds? And wasn't the decision to give the ball to the opponent for a throw-in at the original spot?

If so, what is the difference? Or, what am I missing? In once case, the inbounding team commits a throw-in violation and the subsequent throw-in is at one of the 8 spots and in the other, it is at the original spot.

That was an NCAAW play and the use of the four spots is different.
