This was not the case in 1985-86 when the alternating possession arrow was first introduced by the NFHS.

Back then this kicking situation was described as an illegal touch, but nevertheless a touch that ended the throwin, so the alternating possession arrow switched.

I'm not sure when this switched to the current interpretation (illegal touch, no alternating possession arrow switch), but I do remember the first time I encountered this situation after the rule changed to its current interpretation.

As the calling official I ruled incorrectly and was politely corrected by my rookie partner.

I have always maintained, as a veteran official, that the rules are not difficult, it's the rule changes that are difficult.
