I was wrong, off by a year, but still wrong.
Casebook plays from 1996-97 to 2004-05 confirm that a coach couldn’t “buy” his player back into the game with a timeout if the coach was beckoned and/or came onto the court.
Rule changed (timeout exception) in 2005-06.
