Fingernails ...
Editorial Changes
3-7: The referee shall not permit any team member to participate if, in the referee’s judgment, any item constitutes a safety concern, such as, but not limited to a player’s fingernails or hairstyle. Phrase in red has been removed. While ethnic hairstyles have been a recent hot topic in many sports (softball, wrestling, etc.), why remove a specific reference to fingernails? I always liked that the fingernail example was in the rulebook. Made it easy to explain to a coach, player, or parent.

Layup Lines ...
Pregame Meeting – Addressing Illegal Uniforms, Equipment And Apparel
If an official identifies any uniform or equipment issue that is of concern, the official should allow head coaches to address the problem and not take it upon themselves to deal directly with the player. Even during the pre-game period, players must be legally attired, and paying attention to these details in pre-game will set the tone for the contest. So if I see an illegal headband, illegal undershirt, jewelry, etc. in the pregame layup line, I have walk all the way across the basketline, all the way across the division line, all the way to the head coach to have the issue taken care of? What's the problem with simply saying, "Young man. You can't play while wearing that watch".

Broached ...
Shot Clock – State Association Adoption
If using the shot clock to administer the 10-second backcourt count, the 10-second count begins when the ball touches or is legally touched by a player in the backcourt. If the ball is not cleanly caught by a player on the court, the team in control will get the remaining first 10-seconds of the shot clock to exit the backcourt. Nice to see that the NFHS has, at least, broached the topic of the rule mis-match. Not sure that the sentence in red did us any favors. A team could possibly never be "in control", with a ball not being "cleanly caught" and pin-balling around in the backcourt for ten seconds, with said team subsequently being called for a ten second violation as the shot clock winds down to 25 seconds. First sentence as a stand alone (if-then statement) should have been enough to broach the subject. If using the shot clock to administer the 10-second backcourt count, (then) the 10-second count begins when the ball touches or is legally touched by a player in the backcourt. No need for the second sentence.

Good, Better, Best ...

How about: In games where a shot clock is being used, the 10-second count begins when the ball touches or is legally touched by a player in the backcourt. My change would take care of the few times when the shot clock is turned off (less than 35 seconds remaining in the period) and the official is using a visible ten second count.

Bill Russell ...
Anybody else notice the illegal number in the last Sportsmanship Point of Emphasis slide?
I wonder if someone in the NFHS graphics department snuck this in as an homage to the recently passed Bill Russell, my favorite athlete of all time.

Why don't you post all the pictures of the hair examples that the NF addressed in the rules changes this year? That seems more important. And maybe someone was doing an homage to Mr. Russell indirectly.
Peace

However, with regards to the NF's expectations for dealing with attire infractions, they don't want us talking to /admonishing players rather just notify coach, agreeably there's more work on the flipside bcuz now (as you stated prior) you've got to walk a long ways--ahhh those "unintended consequences " strike again! Moreover, the occurrence of exotically ornate long curved and decorated finger nails on some players could be something we take a look at. |

Astute ...
Hey! Why are you insulting me by calling me astute? Wait ... I'm being told ... Accurately assess situations ... Never mind.

Over-Dramatic And Exaggerated ...
Quote:
So let's say an official notices an illegal headband while observing the pregame layup line, takes the long walk over to the head coach and explains the problem, takes a long walk back to his pregame spot, and only then notices an earring (earrings under long hair can be partially hidden)? Another long walk? Yes. There have been few times where the player doesn't "get it", the player walks over to the head coach to check, and sometimes the head coach walks across the court to talk to the official. While 98% of these rare discussions are easily settled, a rare few can go sideways ("Nobody said anything Tuesday night"), and are not a good way to start the game before the ball has been tossed. If I need a head coach to help me out, I'll ask, but why do I have to get the head coach involved every single time?

Painted Ladies (Ian Thomas, 1973) ...

The recent "exotically ornate decorated fingernails" fashion fad, on more than one occasion, has called my attention to unsafe fingernail length, something I probably would have missed if the fingernails weren't "painted".

Mister ...
I like the way JRutledge gives Mr. Russell the title, Mr., that he deserves. In addition to being a great basketball player, and a great team leader, he was also an iconic figure in the civil rights movement. I never met Mr. Russell, but if I ever had, I would address him as Mr. Russell.
Of course, the way I was raised, I'm respectful to everybody. As a teenager, I once met Bob Cousy in a store where he was promoting his Bob Cousy PF Flyer sneakers. He gave me an autographed photo and I said, "Thank you Mr. Cousy". In college and after, I often spent time with my best friend's family, who treated me like family. I always addressed his parents as Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith. After years of doing this my wife admonished me to call them Bob and Marge. I just couldn't do it.

Bob Cousy PF Flyers ...
While my Bob Cousy PF Flyers were great on wood gym floors, they were horrible on asphalt courts, where we all played basketball in the off season.
The soles were too soft (gummy) and wore away quickly, often thrown out with holes in the soles (after I lined the inside of the soles with cardboard to extend the life of the sneaker)). I eventually had to switch to Converse Chuck Taylor's, much more expensive, but lasted much longer on asphalt courts.
