I like the way JRutledge gives Mr. Russell the title, Mr., that he deserves. In addition to being a great basketball player, and a great team leader, he was also an iconic figure in the civil rights movement. I never met Mr. Russell, but if I ever had, I would address him as Mr. Russell.

Of course, the way I was raised, I'm respectful to everybody. As a teenager, I once met Bob Cousy in a store where he was promoting his Bob Cousy PF Flyer sneakers. He gave me an autographed photo and I said, "Thank you Mr. Cousy".

In college and after, I often spent time with my best friend's family, who treated me like family. I always addressed his parents as Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith. After years of doing this my wife admonished me to call them Bob and Marge. I just couldn't do it.

While my Bob Cousy PF Flyers were great on wood gym floors, they were horrible on asphalt courts, where we all played basketball in the off season.

The soles were too soft (gummy) and wore away quickly, often thrown out with holes in the soles (after I lined the inside of the soles with cardboard to extend the life of the sneaker)).



I eventually had to switch to Converse Chuck Taylor's, much more expensive, but lasted much longer on asphalt courts.
