Mister ...
I like the way JRutledge gives Mr. Russell the title, Mr., that he deserves. In addition to being a great basketball player, and a great team leader, he was also an iconic figure in the civil rights movement. I never met Mr. Russell, but if I ever had, I would address him as Mr. Russell.
Of course, the way I was raised, I'm respectful to everybody. As a teenager, I once met Bob Cousy in a store where he was promoting his Bob Cousy PF Flyer sneakers. He gave me an autographed photo and I said, "Thank you Mr. Cousy". In college and after, I often spent time with my best friend's family, who treated me like family. I always addressed his parents as Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith. After years of doing this my wife admonished me to call them Bob and Marge. I just couldn't do it. ![]()
