I have heard of a local D3 game where one clock worked, the other didn't; the R said the bench of the team with the ball could count out loud, in unison, from 10 down, but the defensive team could not "counter-count."

Usually an alternate timing device kept at the table is standard in our area for high school. This does happen at least once a year. The clock person yells out at set intervals the time left
