How Do You Train?

Looking for info on how your boards/associations conduct training for officials.

1) How Many meetings do you hold with your members?

2) How is each meeting structured? You have a group meeting and then break out into smaller classes? What % of meeting time is done in group meeting vs Break out?

3) Is watching videos part of each meeting?

4) How much time is dedicated to on court training?

Thanks for taking the time to answer....

So in the preseason (fall) we will have 6 meetings on consecutive Sundays. Rule prep, updates, training videos, test prep, evluations, administrivia, etc. Once in season there will only be one meeting in season generally near the end to help with decision making at follow up.

Our associating zone is small (but mighty?) only 10-15 members and a handful of junior officials in a given year but we are only responsible for 5 high schools and their feed programs.
SO when we meet we tend to all stay together and work as a collective unless someone is taking the junior officials to work on something specific.

If video would support the talking point we use it. IMO we and individual officials should be viewing and using film more often at meetings and on our own to not only inform practice to clarify decision making and rational. Instead of anecdotes or opinions what does the tape say.

One of the preseason sessions will be exclusively on court, and during other sessions we have a court available so if we need to break off and demo something or walk through we can.

Between 3-7, depending on the association.

Group meeting or breakouts (sometimes by "experience" level

Usually -- but it can alos be powerpoint, etc.

Not much during association meetings -- most of this is done in summer camps

Meetings

We have 7 bi-weekly meetings starting in late September.

First meeting is the entire association (around 150 members - this is more of an administrative/top-line business meeting), the remaining 6 are broken out into classrooms of 20-30 officials. You must attend at least 4 of the 7 to be in good standing.

TONS of video in the small group meetings, along with discussion and focus on 1-2 topics.

Minimal if any on-court training during these meetings. Not sure if the rookie class does anything on the floor...

Shameless plug for the NASO Association Advantage - we are members of this group... feel free to PM me if you have further questions and I'll point you to the man that can set your group up with their training materials.

We usually have four in-season meetings, once a month. The last two seasons, though, the last meeting has been cancelled due to officials being needed for makeup games and/or our trainers being assigned to said games.

2) How is each meeting structured? You have a group meeting and then break out into smaller classes? What % of meeting time is done in group meeting vs Break out?

The majority of our meetings are a single-group presentation. However, we've had a breakout session once each of the past two seasons where officials were split based on whether they officiated most of their games in a crew of two or three. A trainer would facilitate discussion in each group and ask if there were any questions about plays, rules, etc. that officials wanted to ask or learn more about.

3) Is watching videos part of each meeting?

We don't watch videos every meeting, but they're included when relevant. For example, we had a session early this season about traveling. Because it's easier to see examples that are and aren't traveling, we watched a video showing different plays and the rule basis behind each play being legal or illegal.

4) How much time is dedicated to on court training?

One to two weeks before our first meeting, a floor demonstration of two-person floor mechanics is offered for new officials and any official wanting a refresher. Those attending don't do anything on the court; it's only a chance to observe how two-person mechanics work in practice. As Bob Jenkins mentioned earlier, learning three-person mechanics is done mostly at summer camps. However, there are assignors in my area that supply officials for preseason scrimmages and use them as a mini-camp for officials to work on two- or three-person mechanics and receive feedback from veterans.

Thanks for taking the time to answer....

1) How Many meetings do you hold with your members? The association that I belong to has 9 meetings during regular season, and that doesn't include the mandatory rules meeting before the we have our first association meeting.

2) How is each meeting structured? You have a group meeting and then break out into smaller classes? What % of meeting time is done in group meeting vs Break out? Our meetings are structured by having our rules interpreter going over plays and also going over other situation that occur.

3) Is watching videos part of each meeting? We haven't used video in our meetings but it is more on an individual basis if the coaches upload the video to be viewed.

4) How much time is dedicated to on court training? During the season we spend 2 meetings dedicated to on court training, 2 person and 3 person mechanics.

We also do a lot of off season training for officials as we hold 2 camps during the summer along with a clinics for new officials focusing on mechanics and positioning.

I belong to about 4 different basketball associations. All are different. Usually about 5 to 7 meetings and mostly weekly. One of them meets on Sundays only and might go a couple of weeks between meetings.

2) How is each meeting structured? You have a group meeting and then break out into smaller classes? What % of meeting time is done in group meeting vs Break out?

Depends on the year and the leadership. No set standard. Some used to do one session for newer officials and another might have done one for veterans. But again year to year this changes.

3) Is watching videos part of each meeting?

We try to do this more, but not for every topic.

4) How much time is dedicated to on court training?

Almost none during the pre-season meetings. There are enough camps during the summer that cover that kind of training.

Thanks for taking the time to answer....
You are welcome.

Peace
