Whose Whistle Is It Anyway?

I have a dinner bet riding on this one.

Opening tip-off, two man. R makes the toss, U is tableside (as always).

A-1 taps the ball hard and out of bounds, over the opposite sideline.

B's ball, of course, but who is supposed to whistle it?

"Look Ma, No Cavities!" ...

If the referee (or tosser) has his whistle in his mouth during the toss, jump, and tap, he's eventually going to end up short a few teeth.

Not sure on the proper mechanic but I would find it hard to believe that the R could whistle a line to which his back is facing. How could he see it and even know when to blow the whistle? Oh, and indeed, the teeth issue.

First of all, I was the R, and I just lost this bet. But, to answer the questions...

It was a pretty slow tap to the sideline, I had a better look at it, and I instinctively put the whistle in my mouth quickly to blow it dead. (I also work soccer, so this is second nature to me.) Not sure how this mechanic eluded me. Thanks!

If I am the R doing the toss, until all of the players are by me I stand like a statue. I am not turning or moving because this increases the chances of a collision with a player which will be far worse than missing an out of bounds call.

Fair point. Hard enough to reach the sideline, slow enough to wonder why no-one bothered to chase it down.

As some have already stated before, in a Two-Person Crew the U is the primary Official to make this call. I know when I toss the Ball, my first reaction is to protect myself from getting bumped into by the Jumpers and then and only then attempting to pick up the Ball. In the play being discussed, if I can turn toward the Ball and be of help as to who last touched the Ball, I will try.
