This year is going to have a lot of issues where college officials that work high school as well that will have to make sure we are not confusing the two codes together. I am going to really love the new backcourt rule that was adopted and have to make a few split second situations knowing the rules are not the same as the NF's rule.

Peace

Rule 9-12.4:

To permit either an offensive or defensive player to be the first to touch the ball in the backcourt when it has been deflected by the defense into the backcourt regardless of who was the last team to touch the ball before it went into the backcourt.

Rational:

To correct an unfairness in the current backcourt rule.
This is what I am talking about as going to be different. As well as the new throw-in spots.

Peace

The NCAA needed a change to permit a defensive player to touch the ball in the backcourt??? Strange.
The folks who write these rules don't reflect upon the wording chosen.

No, the change is to now allow both OFFENSE and defense to do so instead of just the defense. As you know, the defensive team could always touch it first, but it was a change to allow the offense to do so too.

I kind of get his point. Why would the defense not be allowed to do this? What is the violation if the defense does this? Is it a backcourt violation on the defense?

Peace

Hmm. So in my son's game when I thought there was a blatant miss of a backcourt violation, maybe the official was just using the NCAA rule instead of the HS rule . . .

So still a terrible method of adjudication by the official.

That would've been awesome if the womens' side adopted that rule as well, to be the same as mens' and the NBA. . .it saves so much grief and headache from having to explain the previous rule in place. . .
