Designated Spot During A Timeout ...

Two person game. Whistle is sounded for a violation. Designated spot throw in on the endline. Before a team gets the designated spot throwin, a sixty second timeout is requested and granted. After the timeout is reported to the table, one official stands on the division line, on the jump ball circle opposite tableside; the other stands, with the ball, on the endline at the spot of the subsequent designated spot throwin.

During the timeout, officials decide to meet to discuss a pertinent topic. They meet halfway between the division line and the designated spot on the endline.

Does the official with the ball:

A) Leave the ball on the floor at the spot of the designated spot throwin, so that when a coach pops is head out of the huddle and asks, "Where is the throwin?", the official can just point to the ball on the floor?

B) Bring the ball to the meeting so that a fan can't steal the ball sitting, unsupervised, on the floor?

C) Refuse to leave his designated spot position on the endline and make the official at the division come to him for the meeting?

You make the call.

Wow. Agreement on the Forum. From some highly esteemed members.

Yet, here in IAABO Connecticut, over thirty-six years, I've never seen such a meeting take place on the endline, it's either at the division line, or at a point midway between the two. Some leave the ball on the endline. Others bring the ball with them.

I will be discussing this with our state interpreter.

If you go by pure NF mechanics, this is an option. You can either put the ball on the floor or you can hold it. I just do not see many practical reasons to leave the ball on the floor as people can mess with the ball or cheerleaders will trip over it trying to do some thing without them paying attention. More goes wrong if you leave the ball IMO. But again, it is a mechanical option. I just think only one option makes sense.

2009-11 NFHS Basketball Officials Manual: If the administering official needs to leave the throw in spot, he/she may place the ball on the floor at the spot.

Now this question made me pause and think about what I've done under various scenarios: 1) I have left the ball at the throw in spot [endline or sideline] when beckoned to conference with partner whe was convening with a coach--upon return it was right where I left it and often a fan will shout "we guarded you ball blue"; 2) I have seen a partner bring the ball with when summoned by me to a specific area; 3) we both meet around center court because it is a good area with less noise or distraction; 4) never have I had or observed a conference to occur at the throw in spot.
