Offensive or a Block??

A coach text me with this play. His gripes.. it was a flop, the kid starts his flight before kid is set. What do you think??

The angle/perspective of this video makes it extremely difficult to decide if there is a block or player control foul on this play. It appears the defender was able to face A1 with both feet on the ground, but it is almost impossible to determine if B1 attained LGP before A1 left the floor to attempt the try for goal.

Hopefully, the C official was strong on this play in his primary and made the call. Difficult to tell from this abbreviated vid.

From this angle, PC. Defense can move to absorb contact.

Close enough where either call is right and coach should learn to accept the results.

My first thought is it's probably a PC if the coach's complaint uses the word "set."

I'll watch the video later to see if I'm right.

Calling this a flop...especially by officials that like to post in Facebook groups...triggers my delicate sensibilities.

This is not a flop in the least. Looks like an easy PC to me.

I would agree with charge calls.

And be careful about engaging with coaches personally. Not a good practice to start and our assn forbids it. Just something to think about.

Obviously, depends on where you are in your career. IF I was sent this video I'd tell the coach
1. first thing I see is 3 or 4 defenders and your kid dribbling under the board...
2. If he passes the ball or stops and powers up this decision (block/charge) doesn't have to be made.

3. Your kid didn't pass or power up...kept gliding through. Crash occurs.
4. If you make official make a decision then he will, hopefully, and u might not like his decision. (A no call would be bad here)
5. Refereeings hard. Referees make mistakes. BUT
6. This is an obvious charge. Not even close. Teach him to power up or pass the damn ball.

Your association basically says you can't be friends with coaches?? Yikes. Well, I'm from a middle size town 200,000 people and many officials and coaches are friends off the court. Today I was at a funeral with 5 officials and 4 or 5 coaches. Last Saturday I was at a local pub with a bunch of officials and coaches. This particular coach has been one of my good friends since I was young. I am doing his game tonight everyone knows I'm his friend and everyone knows I'm impartial as well. I think that line of officials stay away from coaches is a bad line. Anyways, I told him PC all day.

I just watched the video. Yep, PC all the way, all day, every day. The coach's concern about where the shooter was when the defender got his feet set display his misunderstanding of the play. Two feet on the floor, facing the opponent, in the path. Not even at question, but not really necessary as he was in his spot on the floor before the shooter left, even if his feet were shifting slightly.

The flop: No, just no.

Anticipating contact and starting to fall early is not a flop. I can jeopardize a call, because sometimes defenders fall so early as to render contact minimal or irrelevant. This kid gets run over anyway. He created extra space for the shooter by his backwards lean, but the shooter used it all up and then some.
