They had to start with one foot in the smaller circle. I'm guessing it was deemed to be unnecessary. I don't think it has any bearing on this discussion.

I know that we're both on opposite sides of the jump ball issue. I hate jump balls and love the alternating possession arrow, you love jump balls and hate the alternating possession arrow.

That's correct, and it also says that the restrictions end when the ball touches a non-jumper (etc.). However, there's no penalty for the specific parts of Rule 6.

if you go to rule 9 (violations) you see that it's only a violation to "leave the center circle before the ball has been touched..."

So, there's somewhat of a conflict between rule 9 and rule 6.

BUT!! I have revised my position on AP. I still would do away with it but I have come to the conclusion that the REAL abomination upon the game is that stupid arc in the paint and the rule that goes with it. But that is a discussion for another time.

And should be directed at college coaches, they are the ones who want that rule.

BNR:

I know. Anyone who takes the time to search my posts regarding this issue knows my position on this subject. But I would rather celebrate the 125th Birthday of Basketball on this date.

For One Jump Ball A Game Is It Worth Memorizing The Rules And Restrictions ???

But do you know all the jump ball rules and restrictions like we did back in the olden days when we had several jump balls every game, at three different spots, with guards doing some of the jumping? Some of the guys I work with today don't even know that a non-jumper on the circle can leave the circle at any time, before the toss, after the toss, before the tip, or after the tip.

I'd really like to give the ball to the visitors to start the game, and set the alternating possession arrow for the home team. No more jump balls.
