Why did they add this rule? Was it to intimate the other team and thats why its an unsportsmanlike? Is it cuz if the rim breaks there goes the game? I dont know..
Where is some old fart to help with these questions!

I doubt it has anything to do with sportsmanship. It's for injuries and damage to the rim/backboard.

Most high schools don't have the ability to swap out a hoop and a backboard. Breaking one is a major headache. I always assumed that was part of the thinking along with player safety and perhaps not wanting dunking to be used to intimidate another team.
