Two very sad stories

Fan comes out of stands, punches player in North Carolina 3A title game | | USA Today High School Sports

Somebody came out of the stands? Why would any other fan sitting around there allow that or at least not try to stop it?

Catholic Memorial (Mass.) students taunt foe with anti-Jewish chant | | USA Today High School Sports

I know this is just kids and not the worst thing ever but what happened to sportsmanship????

1. Sometimes stupid just happens way too fast for bystanders to stop.

2. This isn't new, in fact it probably happens a lot less now than it used to.

#1. Exactly. Who knows if there was any indication the person was going to do this. It may have appears as if he was going to the concession stand until it was too late.

The way to stop this is to stop making excuses for bad behavior in society. Hold people accountable for criminal acts by putting them in jail and keeping them there an appropriate amount of time.

Of course, the real problems started long before at home. But if the parents are not going to teach their kids what is right, this is what we're left with.

Agreed. It's a logical result of the mentality that wants to excuse poor behavior in the context of sporting events because emotions can run high.

It's a logical result of excusing poor behavior in general because of whatever circumstances. It's not an either-or proposition between refusing to accept poor decisions and addressing the circumstances.

1. Does that article go on to say one coach thinks the officials "created" the problem? WTF?

Well we all know who this comment will bring around. To some extent, officials are almost always blamed by some clown.

I really hope the spectator gets some serious time. As far as no one doing anything, it's not like the moment someone stands up you think they're going to clobber someone. I've seen angry people get up all the time and it's just to let the ref know what they think of a call.
