This was called in the NBA not that long ago.

My first year I had a partner call a 5 second free throw violation. Thankfully he was open to correction from the new guy.

Wow, APG, that was a long time! I've never seen anyone, at any level, come close to what Howard did. Yikes!

I have to admit, it's usually about 3 seconds before I even start counting. If I get to ten, then, I'm calling it.

Howard had it between 14 and 15 seconds and didn't look to be close to shooting.

I like the "follow-up" technical on Howard too.

The only time this was an issue was with one particular player who had a very drawn out free throw routine. If you were playing by the rules it was at least 12 sec. So I blew my whistle and tied my shoe. Made it clear she needed to get the ball off sooner. Coach commented he knew what I was saying the minute I started tying my shoe. He addressed it as well, and we went on without interruption. Even though many of these rules have punishments that don't fit the crime, I believe a little preventive officiating can go a long way.

Is the correct word preventive, or preventative?

Discuss.

I was told the same thing and I get the idea of waiting a bit before you start the count. However, once you start the count...unless you are not following the mechanic we were taught of having a visible "flick of the fingers"...you really need to count correctly and call the violation when you get to ten.

What do you say, without losing credibility, to a coach who is watching you and counting with your visible count? I don't think "I lost my place" or "I have difficulty counting to 10" is going to help your game.

Good question,

I'm just a dumb Army guy, but I would say "preventive medicine" not "Preventative medicine"

But i've been hit in the head a lot.....

Preventive.

The root verb is prevent, not preventate.

Yes.

I prefer preventive, in a pedanticative way.

Per Fowler's, both words joined our language in the 17th century, both are acceptable, and the shorter version is far more common (as in about 5:1).

You mean, other than putting air in the whistle, and bending over to tie your shoe while everyone watched you tie a shoe that was already tied?

HS game, 1967, we wore high socks, with our school colors at the top. I was at the free throw line to shoot 2, and after the Trail handed me the ball, I noticed that one of my socks had fallen down . So, I handed him the ball, and raised my sock. He then gave me the ball, and as I was about to shoot, he whistled me for the 10-second violation. I asked him why, and he then told me what the rule was . . . I did make the second shot . . .

How quaint? Mid twentieth century mechanics.

Do you remember those days, Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.?
