I'll try again:

#24 is listed as DH for #3, the LF. #24 bats, #3 plays defense.

#24 gets on base & coach wants to insert #3. That's okay, but the DH role is terminated and they are now using a nine-man lineup. #24 has been out of the game once, and can re-enter.

Later, the coach wants to insert #24 to bat. That's okay, as #24 still has his reentry available. Now, #3 has been out of the game once, and can re-enter.

If he chooses, the coach can re-insert #3. That's okay, as #3 still has his reentry available, but #24 is ineligible for the rest of the game.

If the coach later wants to substitute for #3, he can do so with an eligible substitute, but #3 is then ineligible for the rest of the game.
