drop 3rd strike

Bottom of 7th. Babe Ruth tourney game. Score 2-2. Team b (batting team) with runner on 3rd 2 outs Batter ha count of 1-2. On pitch, runner takes off for plate. Batter swings, misses, catcher drops 3rd strike. Runner crosses plate ahead of tag, batter steps back away from plate to allow runner in. Catcher then (a) tags batter for 3rd out OR (b) batter then takes off for first and catcher throws to 1b for 3rd out.

Does run count in either situation?

Thinking i read somewhere that the drop 3rd strike is on te same interpretation as a ground out from shortstop to first. But not sure

Thanks

The run would not count in either scenario - if the third out of an inning is the result of a force out or a batter runner being retired before reaching first base, the run does not score. It's in all the rule books under "scoring".

Thanks for the confirmation. I couldn't remember the rule exactly or the number to cute it Unfortunately, the umpires didn't remember it and it's under protest as they allowed the "winning" run to count. So they will be reconvening to finish the game.

How about if the runner succesfully steals home on a 2-2 pitch with 2 outs and it is a dropped 3rd strike and the catcher has to throw the ball to 1B to record the out. Does the run count?

No runs score when the third out is made by the batter-runner before he reaches first base.

So, you mean, how about exactly the same situation that was just answered? Um... same answer.

Not the same situation. The count was 1-2.
