Jerry Layne hit with bat

Maybe not 60 responses, but how about 30 regarding bats that break/shatter so easily? I only coach rec but, now that I'm into the HS years, several of our players and opponents use wood bats. At least three of them shattered this year (bats, not players/opponents) with the shards pinwheeling into the field of play. We're very fortunate nobody got hurt.
I know Bonds started the whole maple bat thing (at least I think it was him) but it seems like this is something entirely preventable by using different materials and/or dimensions (i.e., thicker handles). Did bats always break like they have been in the last 10-15 years? |
