Jerry Layne

I just saw the replay on ESPN. Layne was taken off the field on a stretcher after getting hit in head with broken bat. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ritethru.0159/

A Matter of Time

Sadly, it was a matter of time before an umpire or a player took a broken bat to the head. With the way these bats are exploding these days, it was bound to happen. Thankfully, it looks like Mr. Layne is going to be fine.

This happened a few years ago in a Mets game, forget who they were playing, but Jay Klemm was behind the plate. Don't remember many specifics, but I know this isn't the first time this has happened recently.

Alumnum bats don't shatter as frequently -- maybe more leagues should move to them.

Nope...USM's ! Come on Steve, get with your own terminology (which I like).

No need, let the Old School dogs keep wearing inferior equipment, they will all be killed off by these kinds of accidents, and us USM wearer's will rule the world.

It's foolproof !

All kidding aside...

I'm sorry to see Mr. Layne get hurt.

The sole reason I started wearing a USM was because I was regularly working a field with a high, close, Cinder block backstop, that would bounce foul balls into the back of my head. If I hadn't been hurt, I would probably still be wearing a mask.
