Tim Welke - missed call

MLB.com Gameday | dodgers.com: Gameday

This is inexcusable

Do you think he did it on purpose? If so, he is a cheat. I highly doubt he booted the call on purpose. We are human. We've all missed calls, get over it.

Welke obviously didn't adjust for the off throw; otherwise, he would have clearly seen the "way pulled" foot. As I have been told, "Get back to fundamentals..."

Close enough for government work.

Obama wouldn't have missed that call:)

I wonder if Donnie asked him to get help from the plate umpire, who would have clearly seen the pulled foot.

I wonder if Welke would have considered getting help, if asked to.

If I'm asked, I always check with the plate umpire. My goal is to get the play right.

Keep an eye on the news, he may even have a comment about it.

I'm not an advocate of always getting help, or doing whatever it takes to get the call right. If it's a bang-bang judgement call, and got a good look at it, it is what it is.

But if I'm blocked out, or somehow not getting a good look at the play, I've got no trouble asking of help, if the proper procedure is followed.

In this case, I'm pretty sure Welke wasn't asked to get help. And therein lies the problem. You gotta ask the right question, when you're a manager. You always ask the umpire "What did you have on that?", and go from there.

How about getting in position, making a confident call, and telling the coach "I was in position and that's my call."

The coach doesn't want the call right, he wants it to go his way.

But he might appoint a Bad Call czar to oversee the umpires.

How many "rounds" will he have to buy because of this one?

:)
