No position is the perfect one for all situations and all positions can be improved by taking a read step when necessary.

Here is the thing, there are not many plays that take place there that you cannot rule on properly. And even if that is the location of the play, then the PU is not in play either. And if a play takes place on the front side, then you can still see a guy this far off the bag. This was not a close play we are talking about, this was a very bad miss. I agree nothing is going to get them all, but if a play is on the front part of the bag, chances are the runner is affected and you have other things to see as well that will be obvious.

This may show several things, but not that the 90 degree mechanic is flawed. He was no where near 90 degrees. Had he been, he'd have seen the pulled foot.
