It probably was a courtesy thing that the manager did for his team not because there was a rule. Kind of like a "hey, if we get into trouble, you're pitching" then it would keep the entire non-pitching roster from ribbing the skipper to get a shot at pitching.

When I was a kid, some of the players' baseball cards listed their position as IF. I guess this means they're set to play any infield position.
|

The jack of all trades utility player would have been to much to print on the card.
