HBP in Yankee/Red Sox

Watching ESPN of game and batter is HPB, but umpires declare he swung.

OK, not a problem, but the explaination given was

"he was hit by the pitch which caused him to swing"

Say what - just goes to show that even the MLB's can say something sometimes they wish they had not said. If that was what was said ...

Just kind of interesting

Even the MLB's .... what? Who said this? Was the batter awarded first?

Here's the video:

Two comments:
1. Girardi's an åss.
2. The batter offered.

Saltalamacchia was HBP. The umpires called it no attempt so the HBP stood. Girardi got ejected arguing about it.

It was marginal in replay. It did look like the last part of the bat movement might have been a reaction to being hit.

Go Yanks!

Seeing the video, I agree with the call.

According to ESPN, Girardi said that was the explaination he was given by the umpire.

Girardi said that on to ESPN in the press room following the game.

That's what I was talking about.

Thanks
David

I had it wrong, i thought they called it a strike. I did not watch the game just a short snippet.

So, his explanation was pretty good. I didn't think he swung at the pitch either.

Thanks for the clarification.

The confusion here is that there were two nearly identical HBP/partial swings in the game - one on each team, and they were not ruled on the same way - the Yankme's got the short end of the call in both cases. I can see why Girardi was pissed.
